The Downsides of Food Supplements | What you should know

Are you currently taking food supplements? Or have you ever taken food supplements, like vitamins, minerals or trace elements? Taking food supplements is a huge trend currently. However, most people do not know that there are also downsides to it, which almost no one is aware of.

There are certain substances, like vitamins, minerals and trace elements, which our body cannot produce enough of or not at all. That means, we have to ingest those substances through our diet. However, we can see more and more companies, stores and health therapists that offer those substances in the form of highly concentrated and/or synthetic food supplements.

In theory, that sounds like a great option right? Without having to change your diet and lifestyle, you can simply take some food supplements to take in all the nutrients that your body needs.
However, it is not as easy as it sounds and there are loads of reasons why you should not take dietary supplements.

Requirements for a healthy body

In general, our body can only absorb nutrients and make use of the food we ingest, if we produce the right amount of gastric acid and if our intestinal mucosa and intestinal flora are working well. If this requirement is not met, you can take food supplements and eat healthy as much as you want, but your body will still not be able to properly absorb the nutrients.

That means, first and foremost, what you should be concerned about is, if your whole digestive system is working well. Chances are that it is not, in case you suffer from the following symptoms regularly, bloated belly, loads of gas, diarrhea or constipation. Besides making sure your whole digestive system works well, you should also be aware of the downsides dietary supplements can have.

Downsides of Food Supplements

  1. Profit over well-being. The market of food supplements is supposed to reach 9 Billion Euros in Europe in 2018. Behind Russians and Italians, Germans are the 3rd biggest purchaser of food supplements.  Almost every pharma company nowadays has a food supplement product line because they know how profitable this industry is. Unfortunately, many companies but also stores and health therapists are more concerned about making money than about being concerned about the person's well-being. Their mantra is, the more they sell, the more money they get...
  2. Balance is key. As Holistic Health Coach, I see the person and their body as a whole, instead of focusing on only area and symptom. Our entire body is all about balance. Our heart rate should not be too high but also not too low, our body fluids and organs all have a specific pH value they have to keep. If that value goes up or down, it is a sign that something isn't in balance. So yes, it is unhealthy having a deficiency of certain nutrients but so is having surplus of nutrients...
    Too much iron inside our body promotes oxidation and leads to the formation of free radicals that are known for causing damage to all kinds of cells. The appropriate amount of iron strengthens immune system but too much weakens the immune system. Be aware that many dietary supplements are highly concentrated, they often exceed your daily requirement tenfold.
  3. Everything is interrelated. Absolutely everything in our body is related and one doesn't work without the other. Calcium needs Magnesium to be optimally absorbed by our body and iron needs Vitamin C among others to be absorbed. That means, taking an isolated vitamin, mineral or trace element doesn't have much effect because our body needs all the related substances to mutually increase their effects. The reason is that isolated elements don't occur in nature nor food and everything that is synthetic is foreign biophysical information to our body and it will see it as an intruder that it has to get rid of instead of using it to supply our body with nutrients.

No Food Supplements at all?

That doesn't mean that there aren't any exceptions.... There certainly are situations where food supplements are ok. For example, if you have a serious deficiency of a certain nutrient, if you really know what you are doing or a doctor/naturopath has explicitly told you that you need to take them, if you are pregnant or have a certain disease.

If you take food supplements, make sure to research the brand, where they are produced and what kind of ingredients they are using, if they are synthetic or not and how high the dosage is.

If you want to support your general well-being with dietary supplements, I'd suggest natural, high-quality food products like Spirulina, Chlorella, raw Cacao, Wheatgrass powder or Turmeric powder with black pepper or holistic vitamin supplements. Quality is key in this case.

So what Should you do?

In conclusion, be aware that there are NO MAGIC PILLS or products that make us healthy and happy. Whoever wants to be healthy and/or prevent diseases like high blood pressure, insulin resistance, diabetes, thyroid- and hormone problems needs to sooner or later question their nutrition and lifestyle and eventually make adaptations.

P.S. if the advertising of a product sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Don't let yourself influence through stuff like that.
